Private Monument Project

There was a seasoned small restaurant nearby my house in Hiroshima. It was run by an aging madam solitarily, and had offered family-like dishes and drinks for 45 years. Because somehow the place seems attractive, I visited there and talked with her multiple times. One day, she let me know she decided to close the restaurant because she had felt pain in her left arm broken before and had trouble to lift dishes on the counter. After listening to her story, I came up with the idea to establish private monument for her restaurant and asked her to make a cast of her left arm, then obtained a bronze statue of it. I put the statue on the counter and took a photo of the scenery. When exhibited, not only the statue and the picture but also furniture and fixtures are also placed and composed installation. Finally, the statue was given to her.

私が住んでいた場所の近くに、年季の入った小さな食堂があった。そこは女将さんがほぼ一人で運営していた。家庭的な料理やお酒を提供して45年になるという。なんとなくその場所が気になり、私は何度か通いながら女将さんの話を聞いていた。聞くと、お店を閉めようと思っていると言うでないか。理由を尋ねると、以前転んだ拍子に骨折した左手が痛く、カウンターに料理を上げることがままならなくなった ことが遠因とのことだった。私は、この場所の非常にプライベートなモニュメントを設えようと思い、女将さんに頼んで左手の型をとらせてもらった。これをブロンズに鋳造し、カウンターに置いて一枚写真をとった。展示では、この像と写真のほか、鋳造に用いたオブジェクトや、食堂の什器を展示した。展示の後、ブロンズの左手は女将さんにあげることとした。
