Crystal is ice that has aged for a thousand years

Having been searching for a way to reach Ancient Aiki Lake, which gave Koumi its name, I decided to look into the quartz found in Koumi.The Ming Dynasty Chinese treatise “Essentials of Antiquities” mentions “水晶為千年老冰”. This passage conveys that “crystal is ice that has aged for a thousand years”. It is as if to say crystal is a fossilised form of ice.　Of course, we who live in this age of scientific advancement know that crystal is not such a thing. Even so, the fact that place which name indicates a former sea remains on the cold and high plateau and the crystal—a thousand-year-old ice—is produced there, makes for a story almost too well-crafted. Knowing it cannot be so, In this crystal, I see the fate of the ancient waters that once filled the lake.

水晶為千年老冰

小海の名の由来となった古相木湖に行く方法を探していた私は、小海で見つかった水晶について調べることにした。中国、明時代の著書『格古要論』には「水晶為千年老冰」と記されている。冰とは氷のことで、つまりこの文章は「水晶とは千年を経た古い氷である」というような意味になる。まるで水晶は氷の化石だと言うかのようだ。もちろん、科学の発展した現代に生きる私たちは、水晶がそのようなものでないことを知っている。それでも、厳冬の高原の地にかつての海を示す地名が残り、そこには千年の老冰たる水晶が産出するというのは、少し出来過ぎなくらい話としてよく出来ている。そんなことはあり得ないとわかっていながら、私はこの水晶に、かつて湖を満たした後にどこかへ消えてしまった古い水の行方を求めてしまう。
