Trace the Shoreline

The lake was formed when the Aiki River was dammed by a debris flow triggered by the collapse of a massive lake. It is thought that the debris dammed the river near present-day Managashi, forming a lake stretching from there to the boundary between Koumi and Kita-Aiki. This lake is now referred to as the Ancient Aiki Lake, and its water level is estimated to have been around 30 metres (elevation 890 metres).
I resolved to consider how to reach this lake. That said, the lake no longer exists; all I know is its approximate former location and that its elevation of around 890 metres. Consequently, I decided to walk to observe the 890-metre elevation where the lake's waters would have reached. However, since the 890-metre contour line is not actually carved into the earth's surface, I followed the elevation of 890 metres reffering to the maps and photographed the actual locations that I encountered along the way.
Thus the camera was the tool for tracing the 890-metre contour lines. I would zoom to capture the earth's surface through the viewfinder and frame it in the photograph. Though many places were inaccessible in reality, I could leap across a small space through the viewfinder and approach there. After taking a shot, I would immediately move slightly to the side and reach out again towards the continuation of the contour lines beyond the viewfinder.
I arranged these photographs, taken along the 890-metre contour line, in a single row. Viewed from far places, the photographs would appear as a line. These photographs are the single contour line of 890 metres drawn by arranging photographs, or the former shoreline of Ancient Aiki Lake. The camera was also a pen, allowing me to trace and connect the line of 890 metres.

汀をなぞる

その湖は、巨大な湖の決壊に伴う岩屑なだれによって相木川が堰き止められることで形成された。岩屑は現在の馬流付近で川を堰き止め、馬流から小海と北相木の境界付近までに湖を形成したと推測されている。この湖は現在では古相木湖と呼称され、その湛水高は30m（標高890m）付近であったと見積もられている。
私は、この湖に行く方法を考えることにした。とはいえ、すでに湖はなく、わかっているのは湖があったらしい位置と、標高890mのあたりまで水を湛えていただろうということだけだ。このことから、私は湖の水が寄せていたであろう標高890mを見るために歩くことにした。とはいえ、890mの等高線が地表に刻まれているわけではないので、国土地理院の地図を参考にしながら、それと思われる高さを追っていく。そうして実際に見た場所を、写真に撮っていくことにした。
そのためカメラは、私にとって890mの等高線を追うための道具だった。レンズをズームしてファインダーの向こうの地表を捉え、写真に収める。実際は近づくことのできない場所も多いが、ファインダー越しであれば、私は少しの空間を飛び越えて対象に近づくことができる。撮影したらすぐに少し隣に移動し、再びファインダーの向こうの等高線の続きに手を伸ばす。
そうして標高890mに沿って撮影したこれらの写真を一列に並べた。遠くから見れば、写真は線になって見えるだろう。私が並べたこれらの写真は、つまり写真を並べることで描いた890mの一本の等高線、もしくは古相木湖のかつての汀線だ。カメラはペンでもあって、890mの線をなぞって繋げることを私に許してくれた。
