In 887, a mountain collapse at Yatsugatake triggered a debris flow that swept down its slopes. This event is known as the Ohtsukigawa Debris Flow. Although it is documented only in historical records, from a geologist's perspective, it is a very recent occurrence.
Deposits from the debris flow are widely distributed along the Ohtsukigawa River, but today most of them are covered by vegetation or concrete blocks. That is why it is difficult to identify the deposits. Perhaps because the deposits are still soft and not yet fully consolidated, vegetation grows easily over them, and they are also prone to collapse during heavy rains. It feels as if they are merely closing their eyes—not fully asleep, but quietly awake.

887年に発生した八ヶ岳の山体崩壊は、岩屑流となってふもとを襲った。これを、大月川岩屑流と呼ぶ、文献が残っている有史の時代の出来事であり、地質学者から見れば非常に新しい、まさに最近の出来事だ。
大月川岩屑流の堆積物は大月川沿いに広く分布しているが、現在はほとんどが草木やコンクリートブロックに覆われているため、意識的に探さないとなかなか見つからない。固結が進んでいないまだ柔らかい堆積物であるからか、草木は茂りやすく、また大雨等で崩れやすくもあるのだろう。ただ目をつむっているだけで、まだ眠りに入っていない、静かに起きている状態のようにも思える。
