About a Voyage of Daini Katsumaru

It turned out that the boat found on a beach in Hawaii in 2015 used to be owned by a person living in Ogatsu, Japan. After swept away by tsunami of the Great East Japan Earthquake, it made a voyage across the Pacific Ocehan for 4 years and finally arrived at Hawaii. Related parties in Japan hoped to get it back, but there were a lot of difficulties because this matter related to 2 countries. However, cooperation by people across the ocean made it possible to return the boat back hometown. When it is taken as a disaster monument, I consider the essence is in its voyage. Therefore, I captured an image of a few beaches the boat traveled, changed the movie into lights by using lenses and make them focus on a crystallized salt. The crystal shined strongly like something divine.

第２勝丸の旅について

2015年にハワイのオアフ島で発見された船は、その船に付されていた識別番号から、かつて宮城県沿岸部の雄勝という場所で使われていたものだとわかった。東日本大震災の津波によって流されたそれは、太平洋を約4年間かけて旅し、ついにハワイへと流れついたのだった。この船に戻ってきてほしいと願ったものの、国境を超えた出来事に多くの困難が発生した。しかし大洋をはさんだ様々な人々の協力によって、船はついに元のコミュニティへと帰ってくることとなった。この船をモニュメントと捉えるとき、その本質は旅にあるのだと考えた。このことから、この船が旅をした場所の海の映像をレンズを使って光として焦点に集め、この光によって塩の結晶を光らせることとした。結晶は神聖なもののように強く輝いた。
