Once making a thin section, you get aware of the fact that light can go through rocks. When its thickness become a certain amount, it gets opaque. And the same thing happens to people. If you hold your hand against sunlight, you can understand sunbeam can pass through your skin. Based on the idea, outside of stones is layer rather than surface. In other words, we don’t see a surface which reflects light like metals but a layer which has certain thickness.

薄片にするとわかるように、岩石は光を通すことができ、どちらかといえば透明である。ただある一定の厚みを持ったとき、不透明になってしまうだけだ。それは、人も同じであると思う。太陽に手を透かせば、光は手を通過してくる。石をイメージしたとき、その外側は表面というより表層だろうと思う。我々は石を見るとき、金属のように光をカチリと跳ね返す表面を見ているのではなく、ある厚みの表層を見ている。
