Outcrops are exposures of rocks and formations in the field. In geology and archaeology, outcrops are sometimes stripped for conservation or for educational purposes. The work “sphere” is the outcrops which were found in the field, sculpted into a spherical form on the spot and then stripped. The aim was to create a representation where sculptural and geological behavior meet at a minimum. In other words, it was an attempt to bring the tiny human activity of carving into the strata as crystals of time and space far beyond the human scale.
The resulting object, when hung on a wall, seemed to be floating, like a planet. The expression “wandering star” seems apt, in the sense that it is detached from one point and hovers aimlessly in another.

野外において岩石や地層が露出している箇所を露頭という。地質学や考古学では、試料としての保存や教育的活用等を目的にこの露頭を剥ぎ取ることがある。《sphere》は、フィールドで見つけた露頭をその場で球面状に彫刻し、これを剥ぎ取ったものである。彫刻的振る舞いと地質学的振る舞いが最低限で接するところに立ち表れる表象を求めた。それは言い換えれば、人間的スケールをはるかに超えた時空間の結晶としての地層に、彫り刻むというささやかな人間の営為を持ち込もうとする試みだった。
得られたそれは、壁にかけると浮遊しているようにも感じられ、惑星のようにも見える。特定の地点から切り離され、別の場所で寄る辺もなく浮かんでいるという意味では、「惑う星」という表現は言い得て妙のようにも思えた。
